If there was ever an interview up on the Kindred folk blog that was more synonymous with the concept of bringing like minded friends together, this story could not be more appropriate. I met my lovely friend Sophie, originally though the community of Instagram, after she initially won a giveaway that I was running, we slowly got to know one another finding more and more in common. Last year, Sophie moved to Northern NSW and we arranged to meet, although I was a little nervous at first, as I’m sure she was, we ended up completely hitting it off, finding so many wonderful things to talk about and share. My friendship with Sophie is one that I truly treasure and if it wasn’t for the community I have found through ANKOA we would never have met. You can find Sophie and her beautifully handmade mala bead necklaces via @heart2heartmala.
Tell us about your background - what has led you to here?
I’m 34 years old, I have a twin sister Georgina who is a constant source of inspiration and joy to have in my life. I am a Wife to a proud East Timorese/Portuguese man Jose. I am a Mother to my 3 sons, Joseph 7, Henry 5 and Alexander 2.
During my childhood and youth my parents moved around NSW and I experienced small town and coastal life. They renovated and built most of the locations we lived in. Changing schools and making ‘new’ friends’, built resilience and autonomy and detachment. I experienced a variety of schooling: Public, Catholic and Steiner Education. My parents wanted a different education for my sister and I, when we were 8 years old, they took us out of our public primary school and sent us to a Steiner School. I have the happiest memories of the 5 years spent there. A trip to India when I was 12 also helped shape my view of the world. When I was 13 my parents bought just over 100 acres of land and built a fully self-contained Mud Brick home in a small town north of Tamworth. This was an experience never to be forgotten, although only 2 years, it was a defining point in my youth to see my parents follow their dreams of leaving the rat race and living an eco-friendly existence. University brought some study in social work then a degree in Art Education. Moving to Sydney for my Art degree gave me the adventure I was craving, culminating in meeting my husband on the dancefloor at a Latin nightclub in Cockle bay Warf.
What are you passionate about?
Right now I’m passionate about making and teaching how to make Japamala Necklaces through my little start-up home business Heart2Heart Mala. I attended a DoTerra ‘LavaMala’ workshop about 8 months ago and I have not been able to stop making Malas since then. A whole new avenue to explore opened up to me in the form of Mantra, Meditation, Crystal Properties and healing, and Chakras. Even though I grew up with this in my life through my parents interests, it's been wonderful to approach it all again as an adult. I love art and creativity and particularly enjoy crafting for a purpose. Mala making and teaching has really provided me with that creative outlet that I was craving. The joy I get in giving a handmade with love gift to friends and family is priceless. The added bonus of introducing people to meditation, mantra and crystals that enhance their well-being just makes this project all the more full-filling for me. My long-term goal for this project to be able to make enough money to donate to girls’ education where women are striving for equality and empowerment over their own futures.

Your boys are at a lovely Steiner school in the NSW hinterland, what are some of the philosophies of Steiner education?
Yes they are; well there’s not enough space in this Q&A to really do justice to the depth and breadth of the philosophies underpinning Rudolf Steiner Education. In my brief outline it is a form of education that aims to educate the whole child, on a physical, social, emotional and spiritual level. Learning of the main subjects such as maths, english, science and history are discovered through artistic means such as drawing, painting story-telling, clay, woodwork and hand craft (knitting/sewing/felting/weaving). For example, maths may be learnt through the craft of knitting. Read more about this via the link here > www.waldorftoday.com/2018/10/why-waldorf-students-knit/
Developing a deep reverence and respect for the role that Nature and Agriculture plays in our lives deepens children’s connection with the environment and the natural world. The emphasis is on cooperation not competition. Children are able to slow down and learn through play and imitation, especially in the early years. The essence of childhood is preserved. I’ll leave you with this quote from Rudolf Steiner:
"Our highest endeavor must be to develop free human beings who are able of themselves to impart purpose and direction to their lives. The need for imagination, a sense of truth, and a feeling of responsibility—these three forces are the very nerve of education."
How has that affected your approach to parenting?
I have tried to incorporate Steiner Values into our home life as much as possible without causing too much stress to myself and my partner. I confess to having a TV and plastic toys about the house, but I try to minimise the amount of technology and screen time by boys are exposed too. My husband and I value our nature based childhoods where the outdoors was our best friend. He grew up in East Timor and Portugal and I attended a Steiner school for part of my primary education. We both agreed that we wanted to give our boys a similar upbringing where we are more connected to each other and nature and not to things and technology.

You are also a trained educator yourself, I was really fascinated by the course that you recently did, would you like to share a bit about it?
Yes I have a degree in Visual Arts Education from COFA and some post study in Foundations of Steiner Education. I’ve also been taking courses/workshops in Human Values education. I am completely inspired by the work of two psychologists Ron and Suwanti Farmer who have dedicated so much of their working lives to transforming the way we approach education not just in our country but around the world. Their School in Ormeu QLD is an example of their philosophy in action see more at this link: www.toogoolawa.com.au/education.html
Below is a quote that I love and if you are a teacher and want to enrich your career in other ways you can access information via: http://heacademy.org.au/
“At the heart of Human Values Education is the conviction that, above all else, teachers who are willing for the sake of the children to commit themselves to an ongoing self-transformation into humble and inspiring role-models of good character, will be the essential catalysts for the change that is required for civilization to turn away from its present hazardous trajectory, towards a new world where compassion, harmony, common sense and care for the environment prevail.”

Handbook for Teachers in Human Values Education
If you had a day all to yourself, what would you do?
It feels so self-indulgent to describe a day without my children or partner but here goes:
I love to sleep-in and enjoy a good book in bed, the luxury to have time to ones-self, to not be anywhere for a specific reason and be immersed in good literature is priceless to me. This would also be accompanied by a yummy breakfast, I’m thinking avocado and Persian feta on sourdough and coffee, in bed of course.
After this I would love a walk along the beach or in the rainforest absorbing and allowing Nature therapy to do its work.
I would then find time for creativity, either mala making, photography, hand sewing or abstract painting. Alternatively I would attend a ceramics class because I’m dying to make my own earthern-ware. Lunch would be authentic vegetarian Indian; Masala Dosa is my favourite right now. Lastly I would attend a yoga class, preferably with a friend or my twin sister where afterwards we would enjoy a nourishing dinner followed by Chai and good conversation. If we were feeling like being night owls, we’d watch an inspiring documentary film at the movies.
How would you describe your style?
Bohemian, Floral, Vintage, Feminine, Natural Fibres, colourful, mostly comfortable, simple.
What’s your mantra?
My current Mantra that is helping me to change my outlook is:
My life is full of Abundance in every way.
A morning Mantra that I love, and one that is said every morning at the Human Values school mentioned above is:
We start the day with Love
We fill the day with Love
We end the day with Love
This is the way we Live

Sharna wears the Theodora dress
I'm so excited to feature Sharna, designer and owner of swimwear label, Salté, www.salte.com.au. This gorgeous girl is an absolute ray of sunshine, beautiful inside and out. She was kind enough to show me around her beautiful Queenslander home which sits on a hill looking out to the sea. Her home and designs are a wonderful reflection of her contagious, creative energy which needs to be shared with the world.
Tell us about your background - what has led you to here?
Art was always my fave subject in school, I guess it’s no surprise having an artist for a Father. After school I studied Digital Media at university, and graduated with a photojournalism degree, while dabbling in a bit of graphic design and marketing. I used to make candles and sew little tops to make extra money during uni.. but I never really thought I’d end up in the fashion/design industry... but here I am.
What gets you out of bed in the morning?
Sunshine. The ocean. Fresh air.
Luckily, all of the above are at my fingertips.
Sharna wears the Fable blouse & Theodora dress
You are the owner and creator of dreamy, swimwear label Salté, how did that come to be?
Aw thank you. I’m glad you think it’s dreamy. After uni, I landed a couple of jobs designing prints and textiles for various labels. I got to a point where I felt like I was giving a lot of my time and creativity towards other people’s ideas and hadn’t really given my own dream a shot. I am head over heels obsessed with designing textiles, and have an addiction to Summer... so, I decided to combine the two and pursue my own dream.
How on earth do you balance everything?
Balance... that word kind of makes me anxious. I’m still constantly learning… and by no means, have I actually mastered the skill. I work 4 days a week and run Salté on my days off. I try my best to exercise when I can and catch up with friends. This keeps me sane. I also try and keep Saturdays free. I usually spend the day with my boyfriend or my family and just immerse myself in sunshine & nature. That keeps me grounded and less stressed and overwhelmed.
There are some new and exciting things happening for Salté would you like to share?
Yes! Salté is flourishing and evolving... I’m so proud that I recently dropped my debut clothing designs! The response has been amazing so far. I feel very grateful.
Sharna wears the Fable blouse
What would be your advice to others wanting to start their own business?
Do it ~ you will regret it if you don’t try.
Research ~ google will become your best friend
Ride it ~ it’s a rollercoaster. Up & down, but it should be fun if you love the ride.
How would you describe your style?
Beachy, chill, and bohemian?... Maybe? I’m a bit of a hybrid when it comes to style. I am currently wearing an oversized blue, daffy duck tee that says ‘Define normal’ haha.
During the day when I’m way less dorky I am usually wearing warm tones, and bright colours… I love intricate textiles and embellishments. I’m not really into fancy brands, the glitter and glam isn’t really for me. I love simple, comfy, and flowy. Over half my closet is from the op shop or second hand from the markets. I like it like that.

What’s your mantra?
“Live in the sunshine, swim in the sea, drink the wild air.”

Tell us about your background - what has led you to here?
I grew up in Western Australia and during my childhood lived predominantly in Perth but also spent a lot of time on the family farm. We spent all our holidays either at the farm or at Parker Point, Rottnest Island (which is still one of my favourite places in the world), so my soul was firmly anchored to the earth and ocean from that time onwards.
Following school, with no real direction as far as what to study, I worked for a while and then embarked on a 2 year road trip around Australia with a friend. Our itinerary was based on seeking warmth and adventure, which meant the majority of the time was spent in northern Australia. After working in Broome, Darwin and Tully in Far North Queensland, I eventually found my way back to WA and after a stint in Esperance landed back in Perth, where marriage and two children followed.
I inherited a love of gardening from my mother, so I studied horticulture whilst my children were babes and worked in a number of capacities in that area while they were at school. I loved being outdoors and working my own hours but once they were finishing high school, I sought a change and my love of travel led me to retrain as a travel consultant. Throughout my life I had always had an interest in photography, to document travels and adventures and this has eventually morphed into work as a family and lifestyle photographer, which I absolutely love.
What are you passionate about?
Other than the obvious of family, I think my childhood continues to influence my love of the outdoors and I can think of nothing better than hitting the open road to escape the city to enjoy and photograph the beautiful country that I live in. I feel most at home near water and feel passionate about preserving the natural environment, so that future generations can enjoy it. I spent a lot of time scuba diving in my early twenties and have recently swum with whale sharks at Coral Bay and sea lions at the Abrolhos Islands off Western Australia and am keen to see areas such as these not be overdeveloped, to ensure the survival of the amazing underwater environment.

You have just become a Grandmother for the first time, what is that like?
Becoming a grandmother was a dream come true. I have been lucky enough to welcome two grandsons within the space of 4 months, they are now nearly 6 and 9 months old. They are both absolutely adorable and I’m loving getting to know their individual personalities. I’d forgotten how good baby cuddles were and it feels like a beautiful gift.
Has it caused you to reflect on being a Mother yourself?
When I had babies there was no internet or social media and the only place to share mothering experiences was the twice weekly swimming group I joined, where we swam laps and minded each others babies. I sometimes read mummy blogs and realise that not much has changed, there are still plenty of sleepless nights, problems with breast feeding and temper tantrums! I’m sure with hindsight I could have done some things better but I wish I had realised, that despite some difficult and exhausting times, they were the best days of my life!
Penny wears the Fable blouse
If you could pass on some wisdom to your younger self what would you say?
Stop procrastinating! I’m a Libran and am constantly weighing up the pros and cons of everything, to the point where I can’t make a decision a lot of the time. I would have pushed harder to pursue ideas that others thought were crazy, backed myself a bit more.
What is important to you?
Although I’ve always sought to stay fit and healthy, becoming a grandmother has re-inforced the importance to stay that way to keep up with the little ones. I like to walk, garden and swim to stay fit and eat a diet predominant in vegetables and try to remember to always be grateful for what I have, to keep my mind healthy!
How would you describe your style?
I’m very relaxed when it comes to clothes, I still love a comfy pair of jeans, a cotton or linen shirt, a woolly jumper and boots in winter and easy and light dresses for summer. I have always loved clothes with bohemian bent, no doubt a reflection of my earlier days on the road. I don’t really believe in ‘age appropriate’ dressing! I think if you feel good in something, go for it, no matter what age you are. I love instagram for finding unique pieces from small businesses and supporting local brands.
What’s your mantra?
I’m not sure I have one but I love this quote “comparison is the thief of joy”, so true in my opinion. Love your own life, it’s the only one you own!

Tell us about your background - what has led you to here?
My name is Cassey, I am German and Filipino and grew up in a multi-cultural household in southern California from a tight-knit family. I speak four languages fluently and enjoy being outside but call myself a homebody and surround myself with close friends and family, plants, good books and good food.
What is one thing that not many people would know about you?
That I speak/read/write four languages fluently. Haha!
What does a typical day look like for you?
A typical day would consist of me waking up before my kids, do a light work out and have a cold glass of lemonade before my day starts, I'm not a coffee nor a tea person. Then I wait for my husband to come home from work as he works night shifts as a sheriff's deputy for our city and county.
What makes you happy?
Spending simple days with my family that turn out to be memorable ones. Going to the desert which is local to us and seeing all the old mid century architecture, plant life, and canyon landscapes. I've always found happiness in vintage architecture. So blessed to lived around so many, with an equally amazing history
How do you deal with the mundane moments of Motherhood?
I believe the mundane moments turn out to be my most favorite moments because they are the simple days that wont ever come back. I try to deal with the mundane with as much grace and patience as I can garner to keep each memory sweet.
How would you describe your style?
I'm an eclectic conscious consumer and love bold muted colors but favour crisp white linen over anything. I can work myself around a capsule wardrobe and extend it's life & style as much as I can - and will basically pair anything with vintage high waist denim (shorts in particular as I live in Socal) ha! Minimalism with a flair of dainty prints mixed in with as much rust-colored anything as I can get my hands on!
What is your favourite thing to do if you get a moment to yourself?
I put on Joni Mitchell or Stevie Nicks on the radio and quietly water my plants. Reading a good book in an organized and cozy environment, has always been my favorite past time.
What are your hopes for your future?
To be able to raise my children in a safer world, knowledgeable environment and to simply just enjoy our lives one day at a time without worrying too much about what the future holds for us.
What’s your favourite children’s book?
Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbit, it's taught me about how precious life is. It's opened up a whole new world of what life truly holds for you--paths taken, to love someone, the future. It's an extraordinary book.
What’s your mantra?
Some say they'll move mountains for the one they love, I'd drown the deepest ocean for those who are the most important to me.

Sophie wears the Anoushka dress
Photography My Lens of Love
"You can do anything, but you can't be everything", someone said this to me once and it has really stuck with me. Having a career and a family is a juggle, one that Sophie of My Lens of Love knows all too well. Sophie shares her story, juggling life as a Mum, Step Mum, Wife, running two businesses in amongst everything else and how something had to give.
Her beautiful shots are a testament to her love and passion for photography. As I write this Sophie is heavily pregnant awaiting the arrival of a brand new baby! I wish her all the love and luck on this amazing new chapter of her life!
- Lucy
Tell us about your background - what has led you to here?
I studied Visual Arts at Sydney Uni. My major was photomedia. I then worked in Aerial photography for years, which was going up in small planes & helicopters to take photos. It was mainly for construction, development and real estate. It wasn't at all creative, and because creativity was something I always craved I started my own photography business on the side at the same time I also started my own ladies swimwear range/brand. I did this alongside my day job for 10 years. So essentially I had my hand in 3 different things.
How did you juggle two businesses and a family?
It was definitely a juggle once my daughter was born to run two businesses- my photography business and swimwear brand Sol Bellow. My swimwear business was very seasonable, but even through Winter I was still deep in production and design of the new collection and promoting sales etc. So come Summer, I was pretty crazy busy between wedding season for my photography and also peak time for the swimwear. I would not have made it through those two Summers after having my daughter without family and friends support. My Mum was always there for me, when I needed her as was my sister and a few close friends to help out minding Malou when things got crazy.
Sophie wears the Della dress
Was it hard to let one business go?
It had been on my mind for a while that something had to give, as I really knew that neither business was getting my full attention. It was hard letting the swimwear business go, because I got so much creative satisfaction out of it. But I knew the parts I would miss the most- the photoshoots and designing were something I could continue on with regardless. So that is what made the decision easier. I had a few different people show interest in taking on the business, so making sure it continued on in the right hands was a big part of feeling ok with it.
How are you blending photography, designing and time with your family?
The first year after having Malou was definitely the hardest to juggle. I went back to work officially to shoot my first wedding when she was 10 weeks old, and my husband had to wait outside the reception venue so I could duck out and feed my tiny baby. I found myself on certain days when my workload was too much, I would wish her sleep times upon my day, so I could get images edited or emails replied to. Then the Mother guilt sets in, because you think "No I need to be relishing her while she is young". So when she was 15 months I put her in family daycare one day a week. I became soooo productive on that one day to get through the bulk of my work. Even though most nights I was still working after she went to bed, I just felt so much better knowing I had a dedicated day to get work done. She is now in care 2 days a week, and it works perfectly with my work load. I feel content because my other days are just her and I, doing things she loves and are all about her and spending time together. I do often work on weekends too, so my husband is home to be with her. I actually think its great for them to have this time together on the weekends and she is a real Mummy's girl. So its nice for Daddy to get some love and attention when I am not around!
What made you want to capture special moments?
It started a really long time ago I would say I was about 9 or 10 years old. I used to get my two sisters and their friends and take a little disposable camera into our backyard and have them pose for me in the garden. I would get so excited to get the little pack of photos back from the local chemist. I also remember sitting on my Grandparent's floor looking through their old photo albums and just being so fascinated with photographs. The dark room at high school with the black and white prints sitting in developer was where I would spend my lunchtime. I feel like I have always just been obsessed with photography and the printed photograph.
What is one thing you wish you knew when you started?
How all consuming running your own business can be and how much work it actually is. Although I wouldn't change a thing, there were times in the early days of being a Mum and running a business that I looked at the Mums in my Mother's group that had 12 months maternity leave, and wished maybe that was me. That I could just be a mum for that time and not have to worry about replying to email enquiries, sending out orders etc. But now, I feel blessed to be around so much and have a creative outlet that makes me happy and fulfilled outside of being a Mum.
Any special tips for amateurs?
Oh there are soooo many great resources online now for any type of business. Podcast are my favourite thing at the moment for learning!
Sophie wears the Anoushka dress
What would be your dream shoot?
Oooh good question!!! Let's say a wedding inspired shoot in the Greek islands, with amazing gowns, location and a little holiday in between!
Has this changed over time?
Yeah I definitely feel like I have already done so many shoots that one upon a time I would have dreamed of. Just working with amazing creative people!
You are about to have a baby, how are you feeling?
Yes about to go back for more sleepless nights haha. Feeling all the emotions. I am currently 36 weeks. So I am excited, a little nervous and also nostalgic. I can't stop thinking about how much our life is about to change again and how my daughter will cope with us splitting our time between her and a new bubs. But I cannot wait to experience that new love all over again!
What food/alcohol have you missed the most throughout pregnancy?
Definitely a nice glass of wine after a long day and also soft cheeses! they are my guilty pleasure!
Do you think it’s better going into a birth having an idea of what to expect or would you rather not know like the first?
Oh this is a hard one. I think knowing that you can do it is definitely a plus the second time around. I remember my birth with Malou so clearly still, and I remember thinking and telling everyone "I can't do this", but knowing that I did and can is what I will try and focus on this time when things get intense. I was very lucky with a natural birth and smooth delivery. It was still long, intense and like nothing you can prepare for, but I did it, and know I can again.
Sophie wears the Anoushka dress
Are you going to take a break from work for a while to enjoy/survive the baby bubble?
Yes I will take 4 months off to just enjoy the bubble this time. Then slowly ease back into work come Spring. Its kind of perfect as I will be able to hibernate over Winter with my bubs.
You are also a Step Mum, what have you learned or continue to learn from this journey?
I have been really blessed with my two step children. It was easy from the start and they accepted me very easily. They are now 13 & 18, were 4 and 9 when I met them. I really can't imagine my life without them actually and I feel like they have taught me a lot about myself and challenged me too. When we had our daughter it brought all of us even closer, as she is our common thread. I feel so happy knowing she will always have them around to protect her and be there for her. They adore her and she adores them so much, its so special.
Sophie and her daughter, Malou
How have you and your husband prepared everyone for the new baby?
I am not sure we have or how we can!! Malou is 3.5 so a great age, and is very very excited. She kisses my tummy and talks about and to the baby in there all the time.
Just to add to the mix you have also just relocated, was this a conscious decision for lifestyle?
Lifestyle choice really. Sydney was just getting so expensive and busy. We started looking at other options, and with a short ferry ride from the Northern Beaches, the Central Coast seemed like a winner. I have always had the desire to move away and try somewhere new, and I doubt this will be the last time we relocate. Life is too short not to experience new things & places.
What do you hope for on this new location adventure?
We don't have plans to far away and are definitely open to other places. I am not sure this will be our forever home. We may keep creeping further North and we would also love to do a stint living somewhere overseas!
What do you like to do when you get a moment to yourself?
At the moment being so pregnant, lie down on the couch!
What is your earliest or favourite memory?
One of my earliest memories was when I just turned 3. We were sailing around the great barrier reef living on a boat for a few months with my sister and parents, I don't remember much of it except a big beautiful pool with a butterfly painted on the bottom. Maybe one day Ill go back and find it!
What’s your mantra?
Everything happens for a reason.
]]>
I came across Jay's beautiful, almost haunting voice through Instagram and immediately wanted to share it. "Dreamy acoustic" is how she describes her music and that's exactly what it is with an ethereal folk sound. I spoke to Jay about her creative process and drawing inspiration from personal experience and heart ache.
- Lucy
Tell us about your background - what has led you to here?
I grew up half in Perth and half down south in this beautiful little coastal town called Dunsborough. I basically lived on the beach when I wasn’t at school being a nerd or writing songs in my little bedroom. I have five little brothers and sisters and I absolutely love being a big big sister, I guess that's why all my day jobs revolve around looking after other peoples children! Now I’m living back on the beach but in Perth and loving it. Music has always been there, for my whole life it has been the one thing that has remained constant and the one thing that is always there for me no matter what, so I guess I am just still trying to make that dream work. Even if that means I have to work 4 day jobs to help with the rent!
When and why did you start playing music?
I picked up my first guitar when I was 11 years old, but I always knew I wanted to sing, Mum and I used to sing in the car on the way to school and it used to be my favourite part of the day! There's no other feeling like it and I think when I realised that, I knew that it is all I wanted to do and the only thing that could truly make me happy.
What are your fondest musical memories? In your house? In your neighbourhood or town?
I had a little hiatus from acoustic music a few years back and was in an electro pop band called GRRL PAL for quite a while. We had the greatest time together! My best memory would have to be when we played at Groovin The Moo. It was our biggest crowd ever and I was having so much fun dancing around like such a dag on stage, I was so lost in the moment I danced into the speaker on the side of stage at one point and the crowd and I had the biggest laugh! It ended up being our last show together before the band broke up and I am just so happy I had that amazing 30 minutes in front of a crowd that was ACTUALLY singing along with our songs. I think the fondest memories are definitely those that are shared with others along the way.
At home with Jay and performing
Who or where do you draw your inspiration from?
Mostly the ocean at any time of year. I honestly think just dunking yourself into the sea gets so many wonderful things happening in your mind and in your body. Inspiration always comes to me so sporadically, sometimes a song could come on the radio and the music behind it could start off a whole new song in my head, sometimes I just need to hang out with another creative girl or guy friend for the day and I get home and am inspired to write or record something new. But I am most inspired when I am feeling something HUGE, like falling in love, and of course, heartbreak.
Can you give us an insight into your process? How do you get started? Do you have a plan?
Everyone has a different process, when I was in GRRL PAL we would have structured writing days where we would definitely have a plan or a topic or a story to write about and we wouldn’t stop writing until the song was finished and that worked for us as a duo. But with my acoustic songs, all the music that I write comes from a very deep place in my heart and I find that kind of writing can’t be structured or planned. Some days I will plan to sit down and write a song and no magic happens, other days I can walk in from work exhausted but an entire song will unfold in 15 minutes. I just have to be feeling something strong enough. I honestly think songs are gifts from the universe, or somewhere. Its just about harnessing that creativity as soon as it hits you and getting it down on the page.
Jay performing
Do you get nervous before your play?
Oh my gosh yes. Not all the time, especially if its a venue I am familiar with and have played at before, but definitely if its a bigger/louder/more “high profile” venue. Its just me up there at the moment and sometimes that can get quite daunting. I really miss sharing the stage and the experience with a band so I am working on that now. Its easy to lose faith in yourself if you’re alone up there (depending on that time of the month hahahaha) I love my live shows though, I LOVE telling the audience my stories and having a laugh with them, I honestly don’t know what I would do without them.
Describe your typical day.
Every day is so different! But normally I will get up early and go for a walk along the coast, make myself a healthy, nourishing breakfast and head to one of my day jobs! My music days start the same way but involve a lot more beach, especially during Summer. I try to get to the beach at the end of the day as well and then most of my nights are either spent playing shows or having dinner with people that I love.
Is it difficult to share deep emotional journeys through song, with the world sometimes?
If the story or the feeling that I’m singing about is fresh, then yes, definitely. Just recently I played a new break up song in front of a crowd and I had to fight back tears because it was still so fresh and I wasn’t ready to share the story yet. But a lot of healing comes with sharing as well. It also depends on the audience, if people are listening deeply, I can sense that and I feel more strongly when I’m sharing the song with them because I know they are feeling it too. Its a really magical experience mostly.
Have you had anyone ask if a song is written about them?
No! I’m way too obvious so people just know straight away if a song is about them! Especially if I’m in love, I always play the love songs I write about someone to them before I play them to anyone else.
What are you working on at the moment?
Myself hahaha, just going through a really heavy heartbreak but taking care of myself for once is really helping me get through it. I’ve always been a relationship girl so I’m finally focusing on myself for a while. And thats actually really helping with my EP! I recently went to London to play at a friend's wedding and her new husband recorded a few songs for me at his home studio in Kent and is producing them at the moment. One of my amazing girlfriends has done some beautiful artwork for the cover as well so the whole thing is a real labor of love. I am so excited to share it with everyone. Other than that, I am always writing something new.
How would you describe your style?
Dreamy acoustic folk is how I would describe my music, but my style has just gone through a complete circle. I was always quite boho through high school and my very early 20s, then what I wore drastically changed when I was playing electronic music to fit with that image and now I am finally back to maxi skirts and floral dresses!
Does it change when you're performing?
On stage I try to dress it up a little more, but still flowing and floral will always be my vibe.
What would we find on your Spotify playlist?
Oh my gosh, the crazy combination has made the most hilarious Top Songs of 2017 playlist for me. Ranges from songs like “You Sexy Thing” and “No Scrubs” to artists like Chance The Rapper and Christine and the Queens. I’m also really into Mallrat and Anderson Paak. Angus & Julia Stone, Jack Johnson and The Waifs will always be my favourites though.
What is your favourite movie soundtrack?
Oh my GOODNESS definitely the Dirty Dancing soundtrack. Closely followed by Tarzan hahahaha.
What is your mantra?
“You are enough and you are all that you need”
Where would we find you on weekends?
Live shows! Always going to see my favourite band around Perth. And if there isn’t anyone playing in my city and I have no work on I’d definitely be down south hanging out with my friends and family on the beach down there.
As much as I love my running ANKOA, some days I cannot find inspiration or I'm just not in the right frame of mind, where possible I will take some time out to do something I enjoy like cook, paint or get in the garden. What do you do if you're not feeling inspired?
I go straight to the beach, sit under my umbrella, read a great book or just write down my thoughts.
Anything you wish you were better at?
Definitely guitar! I always get so distracted writing songs I have never focused on getting better at guitar. That is my number one goal for 2018.
As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I always wanted to sing, I’ve knows since my first song.

Tell us about your background - what has led you to here?
I was born and raised in the riverside town of Echuca, Victoria and enjoyed a pretty normal childhood amongst the gum trees. I made the move to Melbourne at 18 unsure of what I really wanted to do with my life. It wasn’t long before I found myself taking on a floristry apprenticeship and quickly fell in love with the blooms. I was lucky enough to spend 10 crazy years working with some amazing florists across the city.
At the age of 28 I decided it was time to return to my roots (something I thought I’d never do!) and moved back to my hometown to open up my own florist studio. Little did I know at the time, the significance that this decision would hold. My story was changed uniquely from here on in.
All was going well with my business, I was so enjoying being back in the country and things got ever better when I met the love of my life, Dan. He strolled on in and it was like we had been together all along. The most laidback, kind, generous, funny and thoughtful soul I’d ever come across. I worshipped him and have never been happier than I was with him by side. I thanked my lucky stars every day that he had come along and couldn’t wait to see what the future had in store for us. My world was crushed when he committed suicide, leaving us at only 24 years old.
Words don’t come close to describing the devastation that followed and I don’t think I will ever truly get over losing him this way. But I count my blessings every day, as I squeeze our baby girl tight. Less than a week after the funeral I found out I was in fact pregnant. This news was as big of a shock as Dan’s death, but it was the best surprise I could have ever been gifted. Our baby has been my saving grace through the most difficult time in my life. Louie named after her daddy Daniel Louis Ferrier was born happy and healthy just 2 days shy of his own birthday.
She is now a busy little 15 month old and brings more love and light into the lives of our families than we could have ever anticipated. Both losing my love and becoming a single Mama has really woken me up to what’s important, where my values lie and the kind of life I want to create for my daughter and I. With that have come some changes, I decided to shut down my florist studio so I have more time to be a Mummy. In turn have commenced studies in early childhood education and care and I now have an online store, Claude and Clancy (www.claudeandclancy.bigcartel.com) selling my own hand crafted aromatherapy blends and wellness products for Mums and Bubs. Between it all I’m just trying the best that I can to overcome my grief and be the best mother, role model and version of myself possible. It’s a work in progress…

What is the best thing about being a Mother?
Oh all of it. I think you learn who you truly are when you become a mother and the lessons and gifts it brings are invaluable. But mostly the little moments in sharing meals together, bath time, dancing and singing around the house with Lou in my arms. Also watching her figuring out the world, how to do things for herself and seeing her darling personality come to life, it’s really wonderful.
You sell Doterra essential oils through Claude and Clancy, why these oils in particular?
I was introduced to doterra whist I was pregnant and have been obsessed ever since. Having a natural alternative to products usually rife with toxins is worth its weight in gold. I use essential oils for everything now, in my skin care, for all my cleaning, to help me sleep, for headaches, to calm and uplift my nervous system and so much more. I chose to use doterra because of the exceptional quality and the company’s philanthropic efforts, they are doing really amazing things in the world.
Any advice on running a business and being a Mother?
Something I’m still working on, it’s a juggling act that’s for sure. I suppose don’t get to caught up in it, just go with the flow and do what you can, when you can. Louie is a terrible day sleeper and I was finding it hard to get anything done at all so she now goes to day care two days a week so I can have a solid stint of productivity. Alternatively if your finding it difficult ask a family member of friend (if you have them available to you, I know not everyone does) to take bub for an hour here and there, its amazing how much you can achieve in a short time when your baby free! One great piece of advice that has helped me immensely is, rather than having loads on your to do list recognize the one most important task for the day and try to tick that off first, if you can achieve just that then you are winning.
Makaila wears the Pru dress
What advice would you give to anyone going through the same thing?
Whether you’ve lost a partner, gone through a break down of a relationship or found yourself a single mother for other reasons, it is all overwhelming to say the least. The biggest piece of advice I have is to take it one day at a time. Try to eat, try to sleep even when you think you can’t. Lean on those around you. Don’t feel bad about asking for help if you feel you need it because the important people will be so happy to be able do something/anything for you during a time of such difficulty. Cry, scream, hit a punching bag, do whatever ever you need to get those emotions out. Remember to breathe and know that things will get easier with time. Continue to surround yourself with the special people in your life, as they will be your saviors.
Is there anything that has helped you through the pain?
Louie. I’m so grateful of the uncanny timing of the two biggest events in my life. Finding out about my pregnancy so soon after Dan passed away really was a godsend. It gave me something good to focus on and I knew I needed to put my energy into remaining calm and healthy to nurture my growing baby. Then once she arrived, well I haven’t really taken a breath she’s been the perfect distraction. And more than that she lights up my world, literally beams sunshine, happiness and laughs into all of my days.
Also having such an incredible support network of family and friends, who have gone above and beyond has definitely made this journey that bit easier.
Meditation, mindfulness and gratitude have also been huge in keeping me sane through everything. Taking time to see beauty in the little things, finding small pockets of solitude in the day and taking a moment to think about all of the good things that I do have in my life when I am really missing Dan, has been extremely beneficial.
Anything that hasn't?
In saying the above, the fact that I have been so pre occupied has been a blessing but its also meant that I still haven’t really processed everything or felt the full brunt of Dan’s passing. I know there will eventually come a time when I need to deal with what’s happened and the brokenness of my heart.
Makaila wears the Pru dress
How would you describe your style?
Casual with a side of bohemian. During the week I basically wear black jeans, white t-shirt and my RM Williams. On the weekends I’m more likely to opt for a beautiful free flowing maxi dress with some strappy sandals. If I’m getting dressed up I cant go past a bold lip or a pair of statement earrings.
Has it changed since becoming a Mother?
I’m all about comfort and ease now. I spend lots of time on the floor and am forever bending down to pick up Louie so nothing to short, to tight or that I need to adjust whilst wearing it.
Who do you admire?
So many people! I’m lucky to have many amazing women in my life I especially admire those who have stood by me and shown me selflessness and generosity in the difficult moments. But generally just individuals who are kind, show determination and are uniquely and unapologetically themselves.
What makes you nervous?
I’m commonly an awkward person so I’d probably have to say meeting new people. Also heights and bees give me the urks. Oh and constantly thinking, did I actually reply to that text or email?
What is your all time favourite movie?
This is a hard one. Probably, Lost in Translation. Basically anything by Wes Anderson or with Bill Murray in it has my heart.
Makaila wears the Pru dress
What are you looking forward to?
My house being built, I’m beyond excited to curate a beautiful and loving home that Louie and I will share many fond memories in, a place that is our own. Completing my studies and hopefully pursuing my dream of creating a holistic daycare studio in the future. Of course nurturing Louie as she grows into her own little independent person. And whatever else comes our way, if I know one thing it’s that we never know what life might have in store for us and I’m excited to see what the future holds.

Kristen wears the Bobbi blouse and Mais skirt in dark purple
Sometimes it's easy to look at images on social media and find yourself comparing, thinking why don't I feel like or look like that? Sure, life may often appear perfect through the lens which is more often that not, simply not the case. Don't get me wrong I'm all for positivity but sometimes these platforms are a great way for women to share their stories and support one another through those real moments. After suffering several heartbreaking losses this is exactly what Kristen found, an amazing community to share her story and connect. Below she gives us an insight into her life as a gypsy child, life as a Mum and what she is looking forward to.
Hailey wears the Nettle blouse
I am forever reading books that conjure up images of lush countrysides, beautifully quaint homes surrounded by leafy green trees and gardens filled with flowers, animals roaming the yard and the sound of children's laughter echoing through the house. Meet Hailey, who was kind enough to share her story with us as well as some photos of her home in the idyllic setting of rural South Australia, where you can't help but feel a sense of magic and nostalgia for the simple life of such tales. Hailey speaks about the rollercoaster that is Motherhood, her love for animals as well as a gorgeous story about how she met her husband.
What makes you get out of bed in the morning?
Between the kids and the pets for sure. They make me the happiest even with how demanding they can be... the pets more so than the children haha.
What do you love most about motherhood?
The endless love, even when you are having a bad day they just love on you. In their eyes you are perfect and it makes me want to do better and be better. Always having a little bestie, someone to hang out with and enjoy life with through the eyes of child, it is just magic. They truly see beauty and happiness in the smallest things. They teach me something new every day. I learnt the true meaning of patience through my kids.
Hailey wears the Della Dress
What advice would you give to new Mums?
It’s hard, but it is all so worth it. Make time for you, don’t lose who you are. Enjoy every second, it goes by so quickly. Like honestly in the blink of an eye they are at kindy.
What is your parenting style?
I don’t really know if I have a style. I guess its relaxed, loving and based on attachment. I am really strong on manners and respect. I think each child is so different what works for one won’t work for the other. The type of parent I was for my eldest was very different to my second due to their needs and wants. My second was a high needs bub with sensory issues so everything I thought I knew learning with my 1st was thrown out the window and my style changed and adapted.
Hailey wears the Della Dress
How do you make time for your relationship with your husband?
To be honest once the kids go to bed is kind of the extent of our time. We occasional get a wedding or something where we actually get to have a night out. I think we have seen one movie and one or two dinners in nearly 4 years. We are just lucky we are a very strong, easy going couple.
Hailey wears the Nettle blouse
How did you meet your husband?
This is one of those long crazy stories, so I will try and cut it down. We went to the same school, however I was in year 8 and he was in year 12 so never spoke. Years after school one of my friends ended up seeing one of his friends. Still we never spoke, countless parties (I even sat on his lap once to talk to my bestie… yes ignored him) I guess it was never the right time. Years later all our joint friends started playing mixed netball, I was covering a player who was sick I ended up staying and being a permanent player. Our relationship flourished from there. 7 years later and 2 kids, just meant to be, but just needed the right timing. A bit of a funny addition, I also went through my school photos and there is a pic of my hubby in the back ground of a pic of me and a friend at sports day. We always joke and say he was stalking me, or well he says I was stalking him but we all know the truth.
How do you switch off?
I love tv ( trashy tv) a good book, my animals and of course Instagram.
Hailey wears the Nettle blouse
How would you describe your style?
I think my style changes often. Depending on the event, friends and how I feel. I guess a boho, whimsical, easy to wear and a mix of classy. I love my high end along with ethical and sustainable pieces. I am now more conscious of less Is more. Quality over quantity.
Do you find it more difficult to make time for fashion now that you’re a Mother?
Yes, and no, I feel the internet and online shopping has allowed me to still make time if not more time for fashion. I just cannot shop with my kids. My kids are the kind that look under the doors of other women and ask really inappropriate questions about me (like why I have a flabby belly, or what is that weird spot on your bum…or same but to others.
Hailey wears the Della Dress
Do you have a good support system?
I have my best friend Charmaine, honestly without her I wouldn’t survive, she is my wine and coffee gal and of course my hubby. My amazing hubby where do I start? Well firstly he puts up with me and I am all sorts of crazy. He was there for me through my PND and he just doesn’t give up, he never questions me and he always no matter what loves me.
What makes you happy?
Animals, I love animals, if hubby would let me I’d add a little piggie and some sheep and an alpaca. I also love sleep. Sleep makes me really happy.
Who inspires you?
All mothers, it’s a hard gig with a lot of pressure and damn, we do a good job with little to zero recognition of what we actually do. Unless you have been a stay at home mum you would never understand just how hard and lonely it can be.
What’s your mantra?
Everything happens for a reason, even the bad things lead you to a path you would have never otherwise travelled.
Hailey wears the Della Dress
Which would be harder for you to give up? Coffee or alcohol?
Coffee for sure. I cannot start my day without one. My kids call me the wonky donkey until I have had my morning coffee (hopefully we all know the book).
If you were going to the movies alone (crazy, I know!), what film would you see?
Anything it has been that long haha.

Nicole wears the Theodora kimono/dress
This girl and I go right back to primary school. The funny thing is, whilst we knew each other all through our school lives and were friendly, it wasn't until after high school that we became really great friends. Nicole is one of the most caring, down to earth friends you could ask for. She would do anything for you, puts others before herself, goes above and beyond to stay in touch (something I wish I was better at) and has a knack for making everyone feel special.
Recently married, Nicole talks about her amazing wedding to her husband Kade on the banks of the Murray River, life as a Newlywed and balancing her busy life as a primary school teacher in Melbourne. Introducing my beautiful friend, Nicole:
Tell us a bit about yourself
Hi there, my name is Nicole and I am 31 years old. I was born and raised in the beautiful country town of Echuca, Victoria. When I was younger, I had always hoped that I would grow up and become a teacher and I am proud to say that I fulfilled that dream and have happily been a primary school teacher for the past 9 years. I moved to Melbourne in 2012 and bought an apartment in Brunswick with my partner Kade. I was nervous to make the move from the country to the big smoke but have learned to love all that Melbourne has to offer. Being able to spend time with my family and friends is very important to me. I also love to travel and have been fortunate enough to have many wonderful overseas trips, one day I hope to teach somewhere overseas… to live and teach in NYC would be amazing! Overall, I’m a very down to earth type of person who loves the little things in life and spending my days laughing and having fun.
You are a newlywed, is married life what you expected?
Yes, married life is what I expected. I didn’t think that much would change as Kade and I had been together for 11 and half years before we tied the knot and living together for the past 5 years. Back when my parents were married they had only been together for a few years and weren’t living together, so times have definitely changed.
Nicole wears the Pru dress
What surprised you most about becoming husband and wife?
Hmm… I think just having to refer to Kade as my husband that felt really weird for quite a while. He would say the same about having to refer to me as his wife.
Tell us a bit about your wedding?
Kade and I were married in Echuca/Moama, the town that we both grew up in. We really wanted a fun and relaxed feeling to our special day and after attending 30 weddings together we definitely knew what style wedding would suit us. Our ceremony was held amongst the gum trees by the Murray River and was followed by a cocktail style reception down in the bush land. We had the most amazing day and night and felt so lucky to have been surrounded by so many of our beautiful family and friends. The day bought out so many emotions, we cried and we laughed! It was so lovely seeing our guests enjoying themselves and seeing how happy they were for both Kade and I. It is definitely a day that we will always cherish.
Nicole wears the Pru dress
What would be your advice to anyone currently planning their own wedding?
My advice would be to do things the way you truly want to do them and not what you think is expected of you because of past traditions. Also to not become so overwhelmed with all of the wedding plans and preparations. I had heard of so many people becoming stressed out when planning their wedding and I didn’t want that to be our case! Being engaged and planning our special day wasn’t overly stressful because we didn’t over think all of the details. Honestly when it comes to the actual day all that matters is the love that is celebrated between you and your partner.
Nicole wears the Pru dress
What is your favourite thing to cook?
I absolutely love spending time cooking in the kitchen as I find it very relaxing, especially after a busy day teaching. There are so many different things that I love to cook whether it be savoury or sweet. One of my favourite dishes to cook is my family’s ‘Spaghetti and Meatballs’ recipe. The recipe has been handed down by my Italian Nanna to my Mum and now to me. If we are to have friends over for dinner this dish is always a winner!
Where would we find you on the weekends?
On a Saturday morning I love nothing more than being a couch potato! We live in a great part of Brunswick that is a quick walk from lots of amazing cafes and restaurants so on some weekends I am out and about enjoying the delicious foods on offer. I also love a weekend getaway back to Echuca, catching up with family and friends and escaping the hustle and bustle of the city life.
Nicole wears the Clara blouse
How would you describe your style? Does it change when you’re at school?
I definitely choose clothing that suits my body shape and not necessarily what is a must have in the latest fashion. I love wearing a variety of styles, whether it be jeans and a tee or a pretty floral flowy dress. My style does change from teaching to non-teaching days. I always say to my friends that teachers can transform after school hours. As I definitely look different to how I do at school compared to if I was to go out. I always want to feel casual and comfortable at school, as I am constantly up and down with the little ones feeling comfortable is a must and a definite ‘what not to wear’ is white whilst teaching the younger years.
What is the best thing about being a primary school teacher?
There are so many things that I love about being a teacher. However one of the best things about teaching would be how rewarding it is. I am forever proud of my students and not only when they show academic progress but also when I see them grow emotionally and socially. It is such a beautiful moment seeing my students faces light up when they achieve new things.
What would your students be surprised to find out about you?
The students always love finding out things about me and it is amazing how good their memory is when it comes to things they know about my life. One thing that did surprise my students one day was when I told them that I got my name on the board when I was in primary school for not being a well behaved student… oops!
How do you think your students would describe you?
Funny and kind!
What is your first memory from school?
I was so excited to start primary school! My brother is two years older than me and I was always so jealous that he could to go to school and I couldn’t because I was younger. On my first day of Prep I remember just bursting with excitement and loved meeting new friends. Some of my Prep friends are still my best friends today.
Nicole wears the Clara blouse
What are some traditions or superstitions you have for the first day of school?
I always feel a bit nervous the night before the new school year begins, no doubt similar nerves to what my students have. I’m a very organsied person, so I make sure that the classroom is nicely presented in a colourful and fun way. The first day is always about having fun and making sure that the students feel comfortable. I plan the first day so that the students and I get to know each other and enjoy ourselves, this way I know that my students will feel more at ease coming back the next day and that bit more confident to take on their new school year.
Nicole wears the Poète blouse
What are your “trapped on a desert island” books or movies?
If I was trapped on a desert island I would all the help I could get hahaha! So I would say that I would need the book ‘Treasure Island’ and the movie ‘Cast Away.’
You’re a new addition to the crayon box, what colour would you be and why?
Great question! I would be a multi-coloured crayon. I use to love the multi-colour crayons when I was younger as I thought they were lots of fun to use. In life I am all about having fun and surrounding myself around others that don’t take life too seriously and are always up for a good time.
You live a very busy life, how do you balance work and home life?
It’s so important to find that balance between work and home life. I know that if I over do work commitments my body and mind will become exhausted. As a teacher it is so easy to continue on with school work well after the bell rings at the end of the day. So I always make sure that I completely switch off by a certain time each day of course there is the odd late night or extra hours on the weekend but I do try hard to make it an even balance. When it comes to the two week break between terms I have a rule to not do anything school related until the second week of the holidays. In general life is busy but the older I get the more aware of the importance of down time and finding a balance I become.
Nicole wears the Theodora kimono/dress
Neighbourhood best kept secret?
We are so lucky where we live as there are so many amazing cafes and restaurants nearby. One of our favourite places that we tell all of our friends to go to is Little Oscar on Lygon Street. It is a 10 minute stroll from our place and hands down has the best serve of calamari and delicious sliders.
Who did you last speak to on the phone?
My parents. They are the very few people that I speak to over the phone. Everyone else is now via text or chat. It’s funny if someone was to ring me now I’d be like oh no what’s wrong?
Jo wears the Pru dress
Photographs by Clare Murthy Photography
Funnily enough I met Jo as I was leaving a receptionist position as she was just beginning, we instantly clicked and formed a friendship from there. Jo is the perfect example of someone who is truly beautiful, inside and out, always caring and has the sweetest, genuine nature.
Jo, originally from England met her husband here in Australia and after living here for a while has recently moved back to England with her husband, Greg and beautiful daughter, Matilda. If you thought an overseas move was enough to juggle, they are expecting their second child in December, are in the midst of renovations and have just started up Tilly + Cub which specialises in fair trade, handmade eco-friendly Moses and homewares baskets as well as bespoke baby bedding. What they have achieved in a short time is incredible, I cannot speak highly enough of this lovely lady. Read on to hear how this Mum balances it all.
Tell us about Tilly and Cub?
Named after my Daughter {Matilda} + my Bump {due later this year}, Tilly + Cub is my third baby. We sell hand woven, fair trade, natural fibre Moses, Changing + Homeware Baskets, along with some gorgeous little baby products. 5% of Sales from our Baskets go to supporting various Charitable causes. I love that by supporting fair trade and being able to donate to Charity I am simultaneously able to bring beautifully crafted pieces to our customers.
How on earth do you balance family life, pregnancy and a business?
It's certainly a juggle. Being new to this business, it's been about learning as I go. My daughter Matilda, is at home with me full time (and not one for lengthy predictable naps!). She likes to get involved in whatever I'm doing so I try and find her jobs like sticking labels on parcels or counting boxes. Some days we make a great little team- other days it's mostly down to iPad bribery and staying up to the wee hours. Being pregnant again, I do attempt to find time in every day to focus on rest and this babies' needs. My husband is incredibly supportive, and picks up a lot of the slack in the evenings like the cooking whilst I'm packing boxes or updating our site. As I said-I'm still learning and hope to fine tune the balance as I go.
Some of the beautiful baskets available through Tilly + Cub
Why the baskets?
I just fell in love with a colourful Moses Basket the moment I saw one. I had borrowed a Bassinet for Matilda, so decided it was something special I could buy for Cub. I struggled to find anywhere to purchase one and that set the wheels in motion!
Once I learnt the story behind the baskets, I feel in love all over again and knew I had to share them.
What is the story behind the baskets?
The baskets are handwoven in Ghana by talented artisans. The motto of the group we work with is "trade not aid". Empowering people by paying them fairly, supporting traditional craftsmanship and creating something not just beautiful and unique but sustainable and ecofriendly.
What is the best thing about being a Mother?
The love, it's a cliche but it's true. The absolute boundless, all encompassing love you can feel for a child is beyond words. I love watching her grow and learn, she teaches me all the time. And makes me so very proud.
Jo wears the Pru dress
What was the biggest surprise about becoming a Mother?
Besides the boundless love; How hard it is!! I was utterly naive whilst pregnant, which is possibly a good thing. It's amazing yes, but it can also be really really hard, and I don't think that's something people necessarily feel able to talk openly about.
How little sleep a human can survive on was also something of a surprise of Motherhood!
I hear you re the sleep!! Any advice on running a business and being a Mother?
Whilst I'm no expert, these are a few concepts I find helpful.
Do what you love, and stay true to why you started.
Do what works for you- don't compare yourself to anyone else, what works for one family may not suit yours.
Don't rush- Tilly + Cub has evolved Organically because the time was right, there was no way I could've been doing this two years ago. Chances are our generation will be working for 40+ more years, and our children are young for such a short time. I believe Women and Mothers can do anything, but no person can do every single thing, and attempting to tick ALL the boxes generally means you don't enjoy any of it. I really believe you'll never look back on your life and think you spent too much time with your Children.
Identify your personal values- both in business and for yourself and your family, and go from there.
Oh and cut yourself some slack- you won't get it right all the time- you're trying your best!
Jo wears the Pru dress
How would you describe your style?
Haha it depends on the given moment! When it's Matilda, my dogs and I walking through the woods or packing orders it'd be disheveled mum bun sporting scruff bag {or perhaps eccentric earth mother if we are being generous}. But it's a real treat when I do get to get dressed up, and I'm really enjoying dressing with a bump at the moment.
Has it changed since becoming a Mother?
Motherhood involves compromise in a lot of areas- and style to some extent is one of those. Tight skinny jeans at the playground just aren't going to work. Adapting clothes around breastfeeding took me a long time to progress beyond the BONDS feeding singlet, I hope this time I will be a lot more confident dressing in feeding friendly clothes which still make me feel good. I would say I'm far more confident in my style now, the opinion of others matters far less than it once did. And when I do get a rare opportunity to wear something special and my daughter says "ooh mummy your dress SO pretty", that's all I need.
Have you had time for some nesting before Cub arrives?
The nesting instinct has certainly kicked in recently. Having previously had a premmie, it's very much in the back of my mind that I need to be organised just in case. I have really enjoyed going through Matilda's baby clothes and getting them ready for Cub. And I have discovered some incredible baby brands through Instagram, a few recent favourites are @love_roo, @ama.ama.co, @rockyracoonapparel, @sarahbendrixkids and @velventeen_babies
What are your hospital bag must haves?
You know what? I have never packed a Hospital bag! My husband was able to rush home from our local hospital whilst we were waiting for the ambulance to transfer us to a bigger hospital. He was in such a panic he packed my entire make up bag but no toiletries, and my nice undies and bras I'd not fitted since falling pregnant. No baby stuff and no pjs! So I am a little clueless!
Jo wear the Clara blouse (coming soon)
Who do you admire?
Whilst there are people in the public eye I definitely do admire, for example Katie Piper @katiepiper_ {burns survivor, Business woman, Philantropist and Mother}, Brene Brown @brenebrown {researcher}, and Brooke McCalry @brookemcalary {creator of the Slow Home Podcast} I find things I admire in almost everyone I get to know-and definitely a new found admiration for Mothers {including my own, my grandmother and sister}. Everyone has a story and usually has been through more than anyone could imagine by just looking at them. Some of the people I was fortunate to get to know whilst living in Australia became women I really looked up to. They have navigated adversity such as grief, loss and serious illness, all with a positive outlook and time for others. They're heroes in my eyes. My husband also has so many qualities I admire- he is endlessly patient and generous, he's pretty much the best human I know.
Your husband is from Australia, do you have plans to divide up your time between the two as your children get older?
My heart very much in both places. Whilst England is where my Family are, Australia is where I fell in love and my daughter was born. Australia is such a beautiful country and I really miss it, but I have appreciated England with a fresh perspective since moving home. We will always spend time in both places, how this is balanced will certainly depend on our stage in life. I do wish the two weren't so far apart!
Describe a typical day for you and where you find time for Tilly and Cub
My Daughter is a dedicated early riser so it starts far sooner than I am ever ready for. I try and get messages read and replied to and orders processed first thing. I love hearing from prospective parents and helping them choose their Basket. Or if there's a photo in my inbox of their new arrival that just makes my day! There's usually a lot of wrapping ourselves in fragile tape, trips to the post office and waiting for couriers. Instagram is a big part of the business, and fortunately I love it- it's a great community and lots of women in a similar position at home with littles trying to get things done!
Jo wears the Clara blouse (coming soon)
What's your mantra?
Ooh I'm the catch phrase queen {it's one of the reasons I love our Letterboards}.
"I am enough" in a world of ambition and a message of more, it's so important to remind ourselves that right here, in this moment we are enough. We don't need to be thinner, richer, smarter or better.
"Where you invest your love, you invest your life." I love Mumford and Sons and this is just so true. For me it particularly feels relevant both in business {love what you do and it wont feel like work} and with your family {spending time with them takes precedence to me above anything else}.
"There is no way to be a perfect mother but a million ways to be a great one."
"If you're worrying about being a good enough Parent, you already are one."

Tell us a bit about yourself - what has led you to here?
I've been a graphic artist for almost 15 years and just naturally love good design, especially in clothing. I then became a Mum and to a girl and I think that made me even more "girly" so my obsession with dresses grew. I'm not a big fan of mass produced cheaply made clothing so I'm drawn to vintage, second hand and ethically sourced clothing. I spend most of my week at home with my 2.5 year old, we cook, clean and play so I need clothing that can do all that but I'm not a jeans and tshirt type of person. My passions are my daughter, my dress collection, drawing and creating vegan recipes that my non-vegan family will enjoy.
Bethaney wears the Poète blouse
What is the best thing about being a Mother?
It's a cliche, but I would say the best part about being a mum is knowing that I’m someone’s rock, I know she’ll come to me (for now) and I have the chance to show compassion in the hope that this will teach her compassion too. Even if she feels like she’s made a mistake, I’ll still be there, I guess it’s having someone you love unconditionally, even on the really hard days when she’s pushed all my buttons and brought me to tears I still put her to bed then scroll though my photo roll to see her cheeky face.
What’s your Philosophy as a Mother?
I feel like it’s my job to bring up a kind human, who is strong and confident, but not arrogant, who can fend for herself but isn’t afraid to ask for help if she needs it. I believe I’m there to keep her on the right track and she's there to teach me how to stay calm and have more patience!
How would you describe your style?
Boho mum ready for anything! I generally wear a pair of gym shorts or my bikini under a flowy dress or oversized boho style top, vintage or second hand if possible, I dont want to walk around in activewear because I’m a bit of a hippy at heart, but as soon as my little girl is asleep I can whip off the dress and do a 10 minute workout. In summer the bikini underneath means I’m ready for an impromptu trip to the beach. I just love dresses!
Bethaney wears the Theodora dress
Has it changed since becoming a Mother?
I used to have a lot more time to plan outfits, I knew what I was wearing each day, now I have my wardrobe separated into 3 sections – work, daily, and going out, so I can just pick something from each section depending on the day. I have also changed my attitude towards my clothes, I’ll only buy something I love now, whereas it used to be “that’ll do”, then I’d wear it and feel like it didn’t suit me or didn’t go with anything else but I felt I had to wear it anyway. The other big change is I’ll actually wear things now instead of hanging them up and waiting for the right time, if a dress is in my everyday section I know I’ll wear it instead of leaving it hanging with tags for years, that was such as waste!
Who are your style icons?
At the moment it's mostly other Instagram mummas, mixed in with people like Bridgette Bardot, Stevie Nicks and Goldie Hawn in the 1970s. I love anyone who can make feminine vintage patterns and cuts look good.
Bethaney wears the Poète blouse
What do you get excited about?
Going out to eat! I also get excited when I sell an Item on ebay because I know I can use that money to buy another dress!
What do you like to do when you get a moment to yourself?
Drink my tea while sitting in the sunshine! If I can get out the house then an hour or so of retail therapy followed by some time on the beach is heaven to me!
Why did you choose to become a vegan?
I’ve always been an animal lover so I think it felt natural to me that I don’t decide to keep one species as a pet, while eating another, which lead to vegetarianism. Then after watching documentaries on what really happens behind the scenes in the dairy, wool, and egg industries I decided that I was a hypocrite for supporting these industries so veganism was the correct choice for me.
Do you find it hard to substitute dairy?
Not at all, there are so many choices of milks, or I can make my own out of cashews or macadamias if I’m feeling motivated, plus sorbet generally doesn’t contain dairy so even when we go out for ice cream I can enjoy some too. Cheese substitutes are even available in the mainstream supermarkets now, it’s really easy and the best part is if you’re feeling stuck, google can help!
Bethaney wears the Theodora dress
What is your favourite thing to cook?
Anything with chocolate involved, I recreate the same recipe over and over until I love it, I do plan to start an easy vegan recipe blog especially for Mums once I have enough recipes up my sleeve!
Do you have any special recipes you can share?
Yes! I have played around with this recipe and I'm happy with how easy it is;
EASY BROWNIES - Click for the recipe
What’s your favourite cookbook?
I really love Chocolate Covered Katie's books, and “Veganomicom” is the go to vegan cookbook for a lot of vegans. The most fun for me though is to take my favorite recipes Mum makes and veganize them.
Do you find it harder to plan and cook with a child? What are your tips?
I think cooking with a young child just means more organisation, and cooking a little extra of something I know she’ll eat like pasta or rice, or carrot sticks with hummus or just good old baked beans with peas and corn mixed through. No matter how good I think something tastes, she always takes one look at it and says “I don’t like (insert whatever I’ve made)” Some nights it drives me crazy, other nights I just bring out the back ups! So each night there’s my veggie based dish, then I cook meat for my husband to go with the veggies, and the extra for fussy miss 2. I’m used to it and generally well prepared now, although Saturday night I strictly do not cook and the hubby gets takeout for us!
What did you last eat?
Breakfast which was coconut yogurt, pumpkin seeds, hemp seeds, vegan protein power, strawberries, blueberries, a banana and peanut butter all mixed together.
If you could cook for five people, who would you cook for?
I’d probably be too scared to cook for anyone outside my family because I’d worry they’d hate my food, but if I could get over that fear, it would be my best friend Tracy who I don't get to see anymore after moving to qld, Sophie Monk, Courtney love for some drama, Dave Navarro, and lastly Lyn White from Animals Australia because I have a lot of respect for her work.
What would be your ideal day?
I’m pretty simple, so I’d like to wake up in my own time (not jump out of bed in a daze because a toddler is screaming at me), dress in a matching outfit with Indiana, followed by a big healthy breakfast and coffee, then off to the beach for the morning, and the afternoon at home recovering from too much sun, and maybe some takeout for dinner. Once Indiana is in bed I would definitely watch a horror movie, in the dark with popcorn!
You live on the Gold Coast, where are some of your favourite hang outs?
Like most Gold Coasters I adore time with my family at Currumbin Creek or a trip up to Mount Tambourine, where there are plenty of vintage stores. For food I could sit and snack all day at Blendlove in Southport or Giri Kana Cafe which is nice and close to work.
Bethaney wears the Theodora dress
What do you love most about the Gold Coast?
The weather for sure, second would be the options when it comes to healthy eating.
What’s your favourite song to sing loudly in the car?
At the moment its “twice” by Catfish and the bottlemen, but I’m sure I’ll make myself sick of that soon, it changes weekly pretty much! Anything by John Butler Trio or Nirvana if I don't have a song of the week.

Meet Bethany, a Wife and Mother to two beautiful children Willow and Jagger. I first found Bethany on Instagram when she had just given birth to Jagger prematurely. I was pregnant at the time and followed her journey hoping and praying for the best. With thanks to the amazing things that can be done now to support premature babies' health, Jagger is thriving.
I talked to Bethany about life as a Mum, a typical day for her and her love of 90's pop videos (I'm right there with her!).

Bethany wears the Monet blouse
Tell us about your background - what has led you to here?
I've always been very interested in fashion since I was a little girl. Once I became a mother I was introduced into the wonderful world of children fashion and created my Instagram with the intent of sharing my love for it.
How would you describe your style?
Relaxed! There is always some sort of bohemian edge to it, but I do mix it up depending on what mood I'm in. I'm all about comfort and minimal effort haha, If I can throw on a dress and be done then I am thrilled! It works well being a mother.
Has it changed since becoming a Mother?
My initial style hasn't changed, but the effort I put in, the amount of money I spend on clothes for myself and the amount of time I spend getting dressed has changed drastically!
Bethany wears the Pru dress
Who do you admire?
I really admire women who have made names for themselves, who have really knuckled down and worked their way to the top with passion to drive them. Especially in a male dominated field.
What are your go to's for creative inspiration?
Magazines, pinterest and lately - music videos!
Which music videos are you taking inspiration from?
I've actually been watching old pop music videos from the 90s - so amazing haha. I'm also loving the videos from Little Mix, they have amazing style!
Bethany wears the Pru dress
Describe your typical day?
Lately the kids have been waking me up at 6:30am and its been a DREAM! In Summer it was between 4:45- 5:30am so I'm really enjoying the sleep ins I've been getting. We live a pretty slow paced life which I adore, I can't handle chaos at the best of times so I like to keep home life chilled and flexible. The kids are incredible with each other, I never expected them to have the amazing bond they do so they occupy each other so much which is great for when I need to start on my Mount Everest washing pile! Kindy days are super hectic because Willow's kindy is 40 mins away in traffic so its a bit of a rush, lord help me when she starts school!
What is your dream creative project?
I would LOVE to work with a major fashion brand.
Bethany wears the Lennon blouse
What was the last thing you ate?
Garlic bread haha!
Where would we find you on the weekends?
Visiting family, catching up on cleaning while my husband is home to occupy the kids (how boring!) or taking a drive up the mountain.
What's your mantra?
Be kind!
Bethany wears the Lennon blouse
What is the best part of being a Mum?
Willow is constantly telling me she loves me and I will never ever get bored of it! Jagger can't talk yet but he will sometimes grab my face and kiss me without me begging (haha) and I just crumble! Kids have the sweetest souls.
Why Willow and Jagger for names?
I had Willow up my sleeve since I was a young teenager, I actually got it out of a Mary-kate and Ashley book and held onto it for a good 10 years haha. Jagger was on my boy names list when we were pregnant with Willow and my husband hated it so I left it on the list for future kids but wasn't expecting to use it. Then when I was pregnant with Jagger (and we knew he was a boy) my husband came into our room one night and said "What about Jagger?" I excitedly said "love it!" and just let him think he came up with it haha!
Bethany wears the Monet blouse
What are some of your favourite things about each child?
Willow is a mad lover of everything! It takes so little to totally make her day or excite her and I love having that kind of energy around me. Jagger is my sensitive soul who is so loving of soft toys and dolls, I constantly find him cuddling them or giving them pats and kisses!
Anything you wish you were better at?
Remembering names!! Its actually a huge insecurity of mine, I'm an absolute shocker and I know it!

Caitlin wears the Delphine dress
Sending messages of self love and positive body image are things that are often not far from Mother Caitlin's mind, who is raising three wonderful children. She talks about being a role model to them and awareness of praise that is not always focused on appearance. A passionate foodie with a refreshingly realistic and simple approach to healthy food. With young children it's not always an option to spend hours getting creative in the kitchen, I loved hearing Caitlin's simplified approach to cooking, including two easy recipes she kindly shared.
Tell us a bit about yourself - what has led you to here?
Ok Hi! I'm Caitlin Langford, I'm 36, and I can't tell you my 'profession' in one word, because I'm many things. I'm a mama, I'm a lover, I'm a friend, a partner, a sister and a daughter. I have a Bachelor degree in Fine Arts, and a Bachelor of Nursing. I also coach strength and conditioning. So I have many hats, some days I wear all of them, and some days I drop a few!
Many things have led me here, but I guess my biggest life lessons have come from family and relationships. Yes, of course things from your studies, your work, the things you do everyday lead you down different life paths, but when I strip everything back, my greatest life lessons and influencers are my family. MY immediate family, my partner and my kids. They are what have led me here!
What are you passionate about?
You wouldn't believe how much this question stumped me! I had to come back to it. I think it's because I'm passionate about SO many things. I kept thinking about this, and about how I'd list ALL the things I'm passionate about. But I'm passionate about LIFE, and ALL the hats I wear, and some days they are very different things! So, at the crux of it all, I am passionate about the human spirit and about connection. I believe that's the thing that all my passions have in common.

Do you believe it’s important to promote positive body image to our children from a young age?
Oh absolutely! It seems to me, we become entrenched in these ideas of 'beauty' from SUCH an early age. It scares me. My experience as a teen saw no social media or online influence, and I still really struggled with feelings of 'not fitting in.' Feelings of not being pretty enough, or not having the best clothes. That's difficult enough to navigate through without the massive injection of online influence that our youngsters are now exposed to. But of course, this 'awareness' starts MUCH earlier than this. It starts as kids, young kids. So from an early age our babes are 'aware' of themselves, how they appear and how they present. Awareness is different to insecurity. We can be aware without feeling self-conscious or insecure. So we need to make sure that we foster a safe space for our kids to grow up as strong, confident little beings.
It's such a powerful tool this social media bio. So, as a parent, I know I need to make sure I'm using it as a positive platform of empowerment & acceptance, not as a breeding ground for insecurity & judgement.
How do you go about this?
First and foremost I'm mindful of how I speak about myself, and about my own body. I'm also careful about making comments based on appearance in general. I go about this by being very aware of how I talk about myself in front of my kids. I don't beat up on myself in front of the kids, even if I'm feeling out of sorts.
I've recently had a baby. Well, 15 months ago in fact. In that postpartum period you go through many periods of change, and your body reflects this. That little belly might hang around for a while, you might feel a bit squidgy or more curvy or heavier than your pre-pregnant body. Your clothes don't fit quite right, and it's generally a bit 'BLAH!' If I was feeling a bit frustrated about this (yes, we all have those day, and that's OKAY), I'd just be careful about talking about it in front of the kids. For me, I'd let it all out to my partner Ryan, have a whinge and be done with it. Thankfully, he is AMAZING, would listen then talk some sense into me!
I'm also careful about how I talk to my kids, and their friends for that matter. It's quite hard, especially with girls, not to comment on appearance and clothing frequently. Some days my girl (and my boy) look SO beautiful, and yes I do tell them that. However, I'll also compliment something else 'you're very clever,' or 'you're a very kind friend' etc. So sure, give compliments, but make sure they are not purely focused on appearance!
Caitlin wears the Theodora dress/kimono
What’s your philosophy when it comes to meals for the family?
SIMPLE WHOLEFOODS EVERYDAY!
Food for the family can get so tricky. My eldest son went through a really fussy eating period. Actually he's still quite finicky with food. I am STILL surprised that a kid of ours struggles with trying new things! But I know this is really common. I used to spend a lot of time agonising over this. I would spend hours in the kitchen making all these healthy 'kid friendly' snacks that I'd then almost have to force down his throat! So frustrating!
Fast forward to now - three kids, a busy household and a million other things going on - I just don't have the time to put into the kitchen that I used to. That day will come around again, but for now I focus on SIMPLE WHOLEFOODS.
For example - this week looks like this:
*A HUUUUGE tray of roast veggies to last a couple of nights.
*A slow cooked lamb shoulder
*Slow cooked chicken thigh
I did this prep on Sunday (took me 20 mins to throw in the oven/slow cooker), and it will give us quite a few meals. We'll have lamb and veggies one night, chicken tacos another night, roast veggies with rice and tofu, and a 'bitsa dinner' (i.e whatever is left over thrown together on a plate or in a toastie).
I'm not one to plan out every meal of the day with precision, but if we have fresh fruit/veggies, a couple of quality protein sources, and plenty of seeds/nuts/fats etc on hand then you can knock up some pretty good meals/lunches/snacks through the week.
I do like to bake something for the kids lunch boxes, a little treat, but the time to do so is a luxury so it happens sometime not all the time. These generally include: bliss balls, muesli slice, pikelets etc. Often its a good idea to make a double batch and freeze half!
Caitlin wears the Nettle blouse
Do you include your children in the food preparation process?
Probably not as much as I'd like to think I do! At times they get involved, but otherwise, I'm a mama on a mission and I go as fast as I can! Admittedly, they do love getting involved so I should probably SLOW the hell down, and include them more. Sometimes we'll bake together, they LOVE it. Yes, it is messy and it takes longer so I find I need to set aside the time and lay all the ingredients out prior to opening the kitchen to the helpers!
We do talk a lot about food though. Education is everything! I often feel like food is a negotiation process, particularly with my older boy. We always talk about what good foods are, what we should eat more of, what we should eat first, and what are 'sometimes' foods!
Navigating kids parties is always interesting! Often there is a plethora of sugar/preservative loaded foods on offer. I don't want to be the crazy lady that doesn't allow or tries to prevent the kids eating ANY of it. What I try to do instead is fill them up before we go (think super nutritious and filling smoothie), then let them have some free reign. I'll keep a loose eye on what they're eating and I'll let them have more treats than I would usually be happy with. If I think it's a bit much, distraction is the way to go! I'll also usually be fairly quick to snaffle the party bag away, and let them pick one thing from it per day (though quite often when they've forgotten about it, it finds its way to the bin). Sorry, got a bit side tracked there!
Do you all sit down together for family meal time?
Yes we do. Well 90% of the time anyway, with the exception of breakfast. Breakfasts, we are not always sitting down together, but we're all milling around the kitchen. I'll be making lunches while the kids eat (or similar).
I really love the evening meal, we always sit down together for dinner. It's a really nice time to connect and chat about the day. One thing we love doing is asking the kids about the highlight or best thing about their day. Always sparks a nice conversation and some gratitude for what's happened in the day! I do quite often feed Arlo some food before we eat, he's 15 months and get HANGRY before dinner is ready, so I'll feed him some mashed veggies, then he'll eat some more of what we're eating!
Do you have a killer recipe you can share with us?
Ok, I'm going to swing you a couple. Two of my faves, things that are in HIGH rotation from our kitchen and things that my kids love.
Has the way you eat changed since having children?
Yes, I would say it has. At the moment, it's about getting bulk meals on the table. It's less about flipping through recipe books and thinking 'that looks great, I'll grab those 50 ingredients and spend the next 2 hours making it.' I'm all about meals that are fairly quick and simple to make. Things that are nutritious and wholesome. Things that can last a few days, be prepped in advance and can be frozen. So at the moment, its very basic things; loads of veggies with every meal, bolognaise, slow cooked meats, lasagne, curries, casseroles, quiche, that type of thing.
I have quality ingredients on hand and go from there - a big box of organic fruit/veggies, quality protein sources, quality fats! You don't need to be fancy and complicated to feed your tribe well!
I love to bake, but the time to do so eludes me these days! One day, I'll find my groove again.
Caitlin wears the Theodora dress/kimono
How would you describe your style?
I feel that the way I dress (like many areas of my life) is a total dichotomy! I'm either in training gear (tights, crops and cons), OR, a bohemian maxi dress and leather flats.
HAS to be comfortable. HAS to be easy. I love outfits/pieces that are no brainers. That pair of tights that always looks good with a plain white tank. That maxi that you always feel amazing in and looks beautiful worn in many ways! LOVING the ankoa wrap dress/duster! At first, I didn't think I'd wear it much as a wrap dress, but Oh My, it is amazing. Loving pairing it back with jeans too, wearing it as a coat with a heeled boot.
What I always come back to is how I FEEL in something - if it feels good, if I feel confident, if it's a quality garment, if I love what I'm wearing (whether it's tights or a dress), I'm going to have a great day!
'Self confidence is the best outfit, rock and own it.'
Has it changed since becoming a Mother?
I don't think my style as such has changed, but I'm probably more confident in myself. I care less what others think of my style, and care more about how I feel about myself. So perhaps I've given myself more room to just be myself and wear what I want when I want - unapologetically!
Who do you admire?
So many people, for so many different reasons! I've never been one to gush over celebrities, or get hugely excited about that person that I've seen on SM (who I don't actually know) that seems to have it all. I'm a bit more of an everyday girl! I love to admire those around me. Other mamas, treading a similar path. Women around me who seem to face adversity with grace and humility. Mum's who speak patiently and mindfully to their kids. Friends who are generous, adventurous, and live their lives with humility!
What are you looking forward to?
Many things. I am very much a 'home is where the heart is' girl. So it's not a European adventure or extravagant holiday that I'm looking for (although a little of that wouldn't go astray). It's self development, the relationships around me, adventures of motherhood, and watching my babies grow that excites me the most! I love seeing the little people that my kids are developing into, seeing those personalities unfold. The here and now, the people around us, and our connections is really ALL we have. So that's what I look forward to, more of THAT.
What was the last thing you ate?
I don't know that I should answer that truthfully! But I will. It was actually some Green and Blacks 85% dark chocolate, with an inch thick layer of Pics peanut butter slathered on top! Treat of choice: don't try it, it's addictive. Highly addictive.
What's your mantra?
Ok - I have a few - but here are a couple!
'Inside the chaos, build a temple of love'
'Real happiness isn't something large and looming on the horizon ahead but something small and numerous, and already here.'
Keep this in mind though - these are my mantras! Things I try to live by. I also have my days where I'm throwing profanities round like wildfire, loosing my mind, and am exhausted beyond anything! On these days, I laugh at my mantras, and think 'yeah right, what anti idiot!' I have my moments where I loose my cool, and speak harshly to the kids, and don't act as I would like. Mantras? GONE - out the window. BUT, they are still my mantras, and I always come back to them. They give me a focus point to pause and reflect, and a way to set an intention moving forward.
Anything you wish you were better at?
Presence. That's all. Motherhood these days is such a challenge. We have pressure on ourselves from ALL angles. To maintain a functioning household, relationships, friendships, careers/jobs, own businesses, social media accounts, the list goes on. I find there is SO much distraction. There are so many times every day that I put the kids down, or ask them to wait 'whilst I do this.' So, I would like to be better at letting that all go. Checking my phone less, checking my email less, being at peace with the mess of life. Being here. ALL here. Right now.
